The Imola round of the International GT Open will see a top new entry in the series: Audi Sport Italia is entering the series for the first time, with an Audi R8 LMS for Riccardo Agostini and Lorenzo Ferrari.
The squad, which represents officially the German brand in Italian racing, has a glorious past in the Superturismo and Superstars series, and is present since 2009 (when the R8 GT3 was first launched) in the Italian GT Championship, where it has conquered two Drivers’ and two Teams’ titles.
Well-established GT racer Riccardo Agostini (27) has already competed in the GT Open in 2019-18, with one race win to his name, while young star Lorenzo Ferrari (18) did one appearance last year although his debut was to be postponed because the car was damaged in free practice. Incidentally, Riccardo Agostini was confirmed as the 2020 Italian GT Sprint Champion only a few days ago, after a long procedure in the sporting courts.
Audi Sport Italia Team Principal Ferdinando Geri, himself a GT Open contender for many season in the past, commented: “We could have celebrated the title confirmation with a nice meal in a great restaurant, but we preferred an outing in a top international series like the GT Open! It’s a long time we wanted to this and we are happy that the opportunity comes now. It will be a great opportunity for the drivers and the team to experience something different.Clearly, we will have to cope with a different BoP and Michelin tyres from what we normally use, but it will be a very interesting experience for the drivers and the team, and as it is a one-off, we can race without pressure...”
